Profession Profile
Since its inception, Kitimat has been a key pillar of the regional and provincial economy, with well-paying jobs and rewarding employment opportunities. Now, with the development of Canada’s first ever export LNG project and still more development on the horizon with Cedar LNG, Kitimat has an ever-growing population, with more and more families relocating to the tight-knit community. As a result, the need for Early Childhood Educators in Kitimat continues to rise. Now more than ever, ECEs have the opportunity to launch and build their careers in this buzzing corner of Northwest B.C.
- Over the last year, 3 child care centres have opened within the community: Cablecar Childcare, Haisla Youth Centre and Stepping Stones Daycare reopened.
- Two more classrooms are set to open in 2024 at Stepping Stones Daycare.
- Since 2018, more than 30,500 new licensed child care spaces have been funded for families in B.C. It is anticipated that more than half of those will be in operation by the end of 2022.
- B.C. anticipates more than 10,000 new job openings for certified ECEs and assistants in the coming decade.
- Since 2018 the B.C. Government has granted $24 million in bursaries to 6,500 ECE students, and created over 1,500 additional student spaces.
- Workplace participation surveys have indicated that more than 60,000 parents and caregivers in B.C. work part-time because they are caring for children. 90% of those parents and caregivers are women.
- By 2026, 1,390 new spaces for ECE training programs are set to become available.
